看题目以为是本讲佛陀的书，所以借来读。结果内容是美国的日本女性移民的故事。不个人视角，而是集体的，千百个人的经历凝结成的“我们的故事”。我们通过照片和信件相亲，坐船去美国的国度，寻找自己的丈夫。漫长的海上路程，我们怀着忐忑和憧憬完成。等待我们的丈夫，多多少少都说了谎，关于职业，财产，长相，我们也是。新国度的生活并不是享福，我们要劳作，家里，地里，果园。我们生子，家里，地里，果园。我们勤劳的名声传出去，进入白人的家里做仆妇。仍是劳作。我们经营农场，果园，餐馆，洗衣店……孩子们长大，喝牛奶吃培根，长得比父辈粗壮，说的一口好英语。然后，战争爆发，先是有的日本人被当作间谍。然后，所有的日本人，都消失。小说最后一节，叙述日本人一夜消失后，另一个集体性的“我们”的感受。而佛，静静地看着一切吗？
