One of Carla Bley's most rewarding recordings, this set features her tentet playing such numbers as "Wrong Key Donkey," "Drinking Music" and the 19-minute "Spangled Banner Minor and Other Patriotic Songs." Bley's wry humor is often felt and she utilizes such colorful players as trumpeter Michael Mantler, Gary Windo on tenor, trombonist Roswell Rudd and Bob Stewart on tuba in this unusual, somewhat innovative and always fun music. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide CREDITS (productions) : Compositions by Carla Bley Produced by Carla Bley Recorded September 1977 at Bavaria Musik Studios, Munich, Germany Engineer: Jörg Scheuermann, assisted by Robert Wedel Mixed October 1977 at Grog Kill Studio, Willow, New York Engineer: Michael Mantler Cover Photograph: Mumby; Inside Photograph: Roberto Masotti Album Design: Paul McDonough Terry Adams courtesy NRBQ and Red Rooster Records Andrew Cyrille courtesy IPS Records Elton Dean courtesy Ogun Records Hugh Hooper courtesy Compendium Records CREDITS (musicians) : Michael Mantler : trumpet Elton Dean : alto saxophone Gary Windo : tenor saxophone John Clark : french horn Roswell Rudd : trombone Bob Stewart : tuba Terry Adams : piano Carla Bley : organ, tenor saxophone Hugh Hopper : bass guiar, bass drum (on 3) Andrew Cyrille : drums
