Sharp Objects (2018)woof. i really don't think i'd have watched this if i knew the story was by the same person as gone girl. absolute trauma porn from start to finish. still an ok story, and also almost certainly unnecessarily brutal. then again, if you want to watch a condescending, christian, southern white lady emotionally abuse the living daylights out of her daughter for 8 hours, this might totally be your thing. i think it's a decent story, even though most of the portrayal of addiction and self harm is complete bullshit. (nobody can perfectly cut words into the dead center of their own back, wtf is that absolute horse shit?!) the portrayal of trauma and its ability to make people act in ways they wouldn't otherwise seems more on point. i think the story is also scratching at the surface of the truth that many of the worst people to ever live on this earth have been white christians. for some reason, our society still lets them claim a moral high ground. that's some shit huh? sadly, the story doesn't drive the point home, which makes me wonder if it's only by accident that it comes through that way. i bet lots of evil white christians watch this and don't realize it's about them. it's also kind of amazing you could take 8 hours to adapt a novel and still leave out like 50% of the important story details. (i read an article explaining things afterward because despite taking 8 hours of my life to tell me a story i could have read faster, this makes no god damned sense.) unless you're trying to suffer, just to be left scratching your head at the end, you can safely skip this. pretty good acting.
