Do the Right Thing (1989)first, fuck the police. it's hot and people are ON EDGE. racial tension and racism are on full display. this movie is a vibe, and it is painful, and it also rules. the lighting, the colors, the sets, the soundtrack, the camera angles. cannot believe spike wrote this, produced it, acted in it, and directed it. wtf. so talent. it is tense and hard to watch at times, and it is also funny, and captivating. can't believe it took me 36 years to get around to watching this. starts good and keeps building. super rare gem. p.s. i do think the movie allows slightly too much ambiguity about what is moral. even putting a misguided (propaganda) quote from mlk jr in the beginning of the credits, then followed by a more correct quote from malcolm x. i don't think there is any reason spike lee would have made this masterpiece to convince people to accept their brutal circumstances. and i'm also confused why he allows room for bigoted and capitalist viewers to interpret this in a regressive way.
