High And Low (2025)

i cannot in good faith recommend anyone watch this i think they used the soundtrack from homeward bound wtf did i just see. edit: please save your time and watch inside man or training day instead. weird continuity and editing choices out the ASS. at one point there is a chase. these weirdos are in the fucking BASEMENT of a building. then all of a sudden one of them climbs out a window and takes a fire escape down from the THIRD FLOOR. jesus fucking christ i want my money back. i've been reading reviews to try and understand how anyone could give this five stars. seems like people think this is like spike lee's evil genius plan and a love letter to nyc. HE DID NOT WRITE THIS. it also isn't a beautiful love letter to anything. we get like an hour of meandering, nondescript shots of random crap around certain parts of the city. if anything, this movie is mad disrespect to nyc by making it feel so flat. i LOVE denzel. i think it could be argued that his acting is maybe the one slightly redeemable part of the movie. he doesn't drop the bit for a single second. however, the bit is shitty, grating, obnoxious, uninteresting, millionaire / billionaire propaganda. HIS CHARACTER IS A MORALLY BANKRUPT *loser* AND THE MOVIE GLORIFIES HIM. he signed up for the role knowing how shitty the part was, knowing that the lines (not just for his character) are truly so insane that me and all the people i watched with debated whether this shit was written by artificial intelligence (which would be an ultimate gaslight because the movie pays weak lip service to the evils of artificial intelligence). the thing is, i think it might be better if a computer wrote it. THE LINES MAKE NO SENSE. THEY ARE ABSURD. NONE OF THE CHARACTERS SEEM BELIEVABLE. the whole movie i pondered if this was some evil genius shit where spike lee was messing with us to prove a point. NO, that's not what's going on. there is no radical commentary on class, there is no interesting morality. there's nothing. we then pondered, maybe the budget was super low? i mean almost the whole thing is shot inside this garish, and somehow totally uninteresting penthouse. maybe they rented the penthouse for a week, had the actors read their lines off cue cards, and then went right to post production. again, NO. they paid denzel $35 million for this role that is arguably one of his worst performances. it would be hilariously bad if they spent $35 million on the whole movie, but they spent over $100 million. this movie is everything that is wrong with capitalism. some jackass dude adapted a movie that's an adaptation of a book. then because he knew someone he got funding for this. denzel couldn't say no to $35 million (which sucks for his career legacy). a big tech production studio funded this crap because they could roll out a slick, compelling trailer and they knew enough people would fall for it (myself included). (don't get me started on the fact that the trailer is alluding almost entirely to a part of the plot that kinda (barely) goes on for like 35 minutes out of 133 minutes, but actually the movie seems pathologically incapable of even trying to address the most interesting part of the plot.) to those who are saying a$ap rocky is good in this...HE IS BARELY IN THE MOVIE. he is basically in two scenes where we watch him talk from behind a pane of glass. the most popular reviews for this make me wanna vomit lol. there are a few interesting scenes in the whole movie and the rest is lol hard to watch. please save your time and watch inside man or training day instead.
