Skate Kitchen (2018)edit: very cool skating (the skating is valid i think) ok, just honestly a great vibe. the lighting is sick. the handheld camera is *perfect*...like feels like you're hanging right there, or skating along. freaking cool. honestly, gen z has a truly jarring use of the word valid. lol. amazing. really a nice time hanging out with these characters slice of life style...if you can handle occasional truly very clunky dialogue early on. truly amazing and so cool to see a movie with essentially zero white people in it. (the white girl is kinda like the only annoying one tbh.) very, very cool skating. shoulda said that first. great music. nice stoner vibesss. gay. very gay. kinda trans vibes at timesss. tight clique (not derogatory) vibes are strong and awesome to watch here. minimal toxicity. ok i lied, kinda toxic later on. funny that skating with someone's ex is considered more fucked up than fucking someone's ex. they boys are pretty universally misogynistic little fuckers, but the writing does seem purposefully aware of that fact and uses them to illustrate bullshit relational dynamics. kinda a movie about how being complicit in causing harm is often just as bad as actually causing harm. there are definitely a few five-star portions of this. gotta say again that the camera looks so good. beautifully showing both the competence and vibrance of youth and then also its fragility. some of these character arcs are gorgeous. "you use tampons?" "yeah sometimes." "you don't?" "can't they kill you?" "no. what?" (actually yeah, they kinda can, rarely, when used improperly, but lol it's fineeee.) "like, your leg can fall off but you won't die." (also no.) "where'd you learn that?" "oh my god. no. ruby." "you won't die from just using a tampon. otherwise the whole country would not use tampons." (not sure this is the most solid logic, seeing as amerikkkans are dumb as fuck.) "the whole world." (ok, they fixed it.) "yeah baby. don't use tampons. you're gonna have a river in your pants. like, would you rather be overflowing with blood, or nicely plugged up?" "exactly." "i use tampons. they work for me. still have my legs." "for now." "are you guys on your period right now?" (somehow, at the end of this whole ass exchange about using tampons, this line manages to land like a non sequitur.)
