Kokomo City (2023)

when people talk about the rates of violence and murder against trans people in the us, it's disingenuous to not clarify that the VAST majority of that violence is committed against Black and Brown trans women sex workers. that's it. they are essentially the entire statistic. it's incredible to see a film that is about these exact facts. a well made film that's also bringing a bit of humor and joy into the conversation to keep it real and balance out the trauma of it all. it's refreshing to see the actual convo playing out this publicly and this honestly. this film is a direct conversation about the intersection of transness, race, class, sexuality, and sex work. yes, it is a little bit reductive because it represents the opinions of only four women. women with a particular perspective on sex work and what they want out of it. this looks crazy good. gorgeous cinematography. really, really candid. great interviews. great editing. fried egg looks crazy in black and white. it was also good to hear a little from the chasers, honestly. that material was presented in a really responsible manner, in my opinion. you should watch this, but also please don't come away thinking it represents all trans women.
