The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)there is some cool writing here at least in the beginning (until it becomes super repetitive) and a bit of cool editing and also some cool makeup and effects. not cool watching all the queers and freaks and BIPOC (all of them) die first while the white straight people continue breathing. hmmm. hilarious i'm saying this is too long, as someone who is almost always advocating for things to be longer. but this dragged and spent too much time on boring, unsatisfying subplots. "your aunt was an ambitious woman. a very, very ambitious woman. something like this was bound to happen." (so true.) (also just really digging deep on the misogyny like so much of the show is.) did the "child bride" mysteriously pick up an irish accent starting in episode six? hmmm. the scariest part of this was watching all these narcissists who deeply believe in capitalism...like...just talking? horrific. (basically all the things said...horrific.) "i expect he's the kind of man you call if you...i don't know, accidentally kill a prostitute and need to dismember the corpse." (classic line from the "good guy" in the show. (who is a cop...yikes.)) (oh, and the fuckin' cop and the head bad guy, who is very, very clumsily written to be daddy sackler, evil piece of shit, are like friends? just chumming it up as joint narrators for the entire show?) lol, ok the evil pharma company keeps a copy machine (how convenient for the "good guys") in the basement right next to all the top secret incriminating files they are trying to hide? lol. hahahahaha omfg now the koch family is in this shit too? this is such dumbassery. the writing is like, ok let's hint at something (in a pretty clear way). then let's hint it again like two or three more times. then in case the audience is super incapable of basic thought, we will just say it. "hi, i am character so and so and i am evil. look at me i am torturing and killing my own wife." ya, i dunno. super confusing why you would write this show that is quintessential telling-instead-of-showing writing (vom) and just preaching at us the whole time about a wide range of societal hot topic bullshit...and purposefully model the family after the sacklers, but then humanize them and try to elicit sympathy for them slash make them likable. not my vibe. could totally be like four stars if the writing wasn't dog shit. weird drawn out allegory for how rich people (who in reality sleep very soundly at night and repeatedly choose to continue making evil choices) maybe would be haunted by guilt (they wouldn't). hahahahaha glass doesn't penetrate skin even close to that easily. the cop almost dnf'ed lol. "i wonder why you're dragging this out." i dnf'ed. vapid. p.s. omg toby poser surprise tho.
