Aftersun (2022)

y'all, i think charlotte wells is a genius maybe. doing this with your directorial debut is pretty audacious. some crazy cool shots...almost cried several times just because of what i was looking at...but not because it was like breathtakingly beautiful or anything (but it often was) but moreso because this movie made me think to myself over and over again, "it's incredible that another human's mind created this work of art"...a painting really. a series of paintings maybe with a poem read behind in the background. a poem about love. and change, and balance, and compartmentilization, and pain. so much sublety to the writing. incredible, honestly. the scene where eleven-year-old sophie lays in bed and casually describes what it feels like to be severely depressed...and calum realizing that his daughter is going to struggle with depression just like he does. the scenes where the entire scene happens off camera, but the dialogue in those scenes is just immaculate and portrays far more than the camera could hope to. and then other times when there is no speech and the camera does all of the story telling. the leads are both incredible. truly so, so goregeous. you can tell quite a few people poured their souls into this. bravo.
