Devs (开发者 第 1 季)"listen to a lot of bach? a lot of coltrane?" "no." "then shut the fuck up." "i think you need to stop seeing them as a tech company. see them as the mob." another speculative science fiction banger from alex garland that was ahead of its time. tense and (mostly) focused tech thriller that we should all be taking very seriously (just like ex machina). a couple casting issues (nick offerman, allison pill, zach grenier) are not super believable, but there are other well-cast and super interesting characters. i come around to nick and allison a little by the end...kinda. just gotta laugh real hard at zach grenier as like a hit man. lololol i cannot believe a single human alive believes zach grenier is a badass. ooo, sorry daddy kenton, what are you gonna do? mansplain me to death? allison pill could be very good as a different type of psychopathic white lady, just not this type of psychopathic white lady. nick offerman, close, but usually just kinda meh. cailee spaeny, i think gender fuckery is cool, and i think i understand what alex garland was doing with this choice, but i just assumed this was like a baby trans character. nope, just a boy played by a girl. cool idea, i just didn't really pick up on it until looking up statements from garland himself, which means it wasn't really effective how he meant it. despite these strange casting choices, the story and the rest of the cast and the concept and the interesting visuals carry this mini series with ease. philosophically and scientifically sound enough to be interesting and not annoying. this is super impressive with a topic this complex. "he's a tech genius." "he's not a fucking genius, stewart. he's an entrepreneur. and he's crazy. he's obsessive. he kills people." "what if you're wrong?" "wrong?" "you. your tech cult. wrong." "the problem with the people that [sic] run tech companies is that they become fanatics...end up thinking they're messiahs." sorry letterbox, we need to turn the internet off. goodnight.
