Babylon (2022)watch this movie and watch it with someone you know who loves movies. three features this man has both written and directed...whiplash...la la land...babylon. (there is one prior that he also produced, but i haven't seen it.) don't remember whiplash, but based on the other two, this dude has a thing for jazz music and dropping the mood of a movie right off a cliff. i was unimpressed with that storytelling approach in la la land, yet i think it works okay-ish here...like...it feels like it's at least saying a lil something this time. the first two hours of this are absolutely fantastic. like just shrieking fun. absolute hedonism. titties and fucking cocaine. (and penis too.) songs about pussy. lesbians and bisexuals. it's truly a blast...until it's not. i think something i really enjoyed was the like quasi period piece vibe it had going on. we have suggestions of the twenties. we have some stuff that seems historically accurate and right on (what do i know though i wasn't alive then). then we also have all kinds of modern slang, dialogue partly in the modern vernacular. fabrics i don't think existed until at least thirty years later. fantastic fucking acting. lighting looking so so good at times. really cool writing that's like kinda camp, kinda satire, kinda meta, kinda funny, kinda shocking in a bombastic way. barbie. geeze louise. barbie can cry an exact amount of tears exactly on cue. incredible. the sexy old man who was in oceans eleven back in the day. all the white girls in this just look like different versions of emma stone, i'm sorry i'll go to bed now. night.
