Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002)we plod through two hours of this...and there is a payoff...briefly...the last scene is going so well...until they insult us with the voice-over. man, i love park chan-wook, like a lot, but this is rough. by far the most common emotion i felt while watching this was confusion, and it was like seventy minutes until i felt anything at all besides confusion. the writing is all over the place. just kinda like brutality and gore trauma porn for the sake of it? which, like...cool, but it would also be cool if this was saying something more definitive. i respect this as a part of park chan-wook becoming who he is today. i see how this was formative. we just have goofy characters that don't make a lot of sense and are hard to connect with. a disjointed plot. i can definitely see the beginning of the absolutely brilliant visuals that are one of his trademarks, but it just wasn't enough.
