Pleasure (2021)

the only genre this belongs in is horror. the cannibalistic nature of #girlboss capitalism. the terror that patriarchy inflicts upon everyone who is not a cis man. the more i think about it though, it feels like the movie is commenting on patriarchy and rape culture without acknowledging the ways those things are interconnected with capitalism, and at times the same thing. it works somewhat well as horror. though, for how difficult of a watch this is, i would ideally expect the payoff to be more rewarding. the script sticks to pretty cliche depictions of the systems it aims to critique (i think, question mark). yeah yeah yeah patriarchy hurts women and hurt people hurt people. i wish there was something more original said about it all. there was almossst a payoff at a certain point, but it just went bleak. vacillating between gorgeous to look at and utterly grotesque to look at. bleak bleak bleak. not sure this managed to critique the system, i think it came closer to replicating the system. like a hornier, more traumatic, less human version of a sean baker film, which is quite shocking because that guy is a total piece of shit in real life.
