WTO/99 (2025)overall, somewhat middling propaganda. don't get me wrong, there's lots of powerful footage here, but the editing choices deliver a film that is somehow both unfocused and myopic at the same time. some key initial thoughts:
- giving so much air time to people claiming things along the lines of "the police have never done stuff like this" is abhorrently racist and revisionist history. the police have been brutalizing and terrorizing non-white americans for a very, very long time.
- when ninety-five percent of your sound bites are literally things that come out of the mouth of neo-nazi don@ld tr*mp, and you provide no further critique or analysis, that is absolutely a problem.
- this film presents the facts as if the issue is "free trade" whatever that means. free trade is probably some of the issue, but the actual core issue is capitalism, which the film provides almost no commentary on.
- critiquing "free trade" without an in-depth anti-capitalist analysis is just nationalism, and i think it's absolutely illuminating how many times it's pointed out that right wingers and the supposed "left" were in agreement.
- there is a narrative that is common among millennial and gen z "leftists" and "activists" that the internet has been a liberatory force that has allowed us to organize stronger resistance...i think this document is a key counterpoint to that.
