American Dream (1992)i think the film carries an overall just so slight bias in favor of the concessionary mindset of the international union. this is the only account of this strike i've been exposed to, and it was a thought provoking meditation on the power of organizing and solidarity. if you need any evidence of the power of unions...these people were making ten dollars an hour and one person said their house cost thirty-two thousand. needless to say, houses are many times more expensive, and wages in a lot of places are not even double. this discrepancy tracks the decline in power of us labor over the last several decades. capitalism hates unions because unions enforce more fair sharing of corporate incomes. it's wild to me that this isn't readily obvious to every single person alive who isn't a member of the ruling class...but some people would rather lick the boot of capitalism than band together with the working class to achieve a better world for all of us. the style of the documentary drops us right into this debate making us truly think about what we believe and which side we'd be on. it's an uncomfortable quandary at times, but one that's well worth the effort in my opinion. watch this, then go start a union at your place of employment. yes, every single one of you.
