standard documentary on a very important topic. very unfocused narrative, trying to cover such a diverse range of topics that they don't cover any of them especially well. this absolutely should have been a mini series or it should have been pared down in scope. egregious decision to leave in clips of gabriella coleman misgendering chelsea manning. horrific decision to not go back and edit those clips before release. this came out a few months after she came out as trans for fuck sake. have some fucking respect, brian. though it truly covers a whole range of issues, the issue this documentary circles around is internet and information freedom. the documentary, shockingly never really even attempts to define who is advocating for the internet to be controlled by trillion dollar corporations...sure, they mention corporations want anti-piracy laws passed, they point out that the government is doing evil shit, they point out that the pigs are doing evil shit. however, never at any point do they tie it all together. kids, the unifying thread is capitalism. all of these evil forces are foot soldiers of capitalism. capitalism and capitalists want to control every being and every technology on the face of the planet. capitalism is the disease. capitalists are deeply mentally ill (yes, all of them). it's also alarming how absolutely naive most of the people interviewed are. they are shocked the cops are doing evil shit. they are shocked this prosecution is happening under obama (gasp). they can't believe m.i.t. won't help aaron. real loud so those in the back can hear. the divide is not between left and right, it's not between democrats and republicans it is between capitalists and anti-capitalists. universities are a puppet of capitalism. corporations are obviously one of the largest driving forces of capitalism. the pigs are the hired muscle for capitalism (literally their only job), the us government is the largest capitalist force on earth (our army literally exists to enforce capitalism around the globe...we start wars over capitalism), the democratic party is made up of politicians who are almost entirely capitalists (yes, obama, and to a large extent politicians like bernie, aoc, and mamdani are also capitalists)...none of these forces are your friends. this came out over a decade ago, and every issue presented in this documentary has gotten significantly worse in the time since it was released. it's gotten worse because of americans' sick, sick, twisted devotion to the system of capitalism. nothing will change until our mindset towards capitalism changes. we need to wake up.
