Predestination (2014)i don't really think there's an interesting way to pose the question "can we change our destiny"...or at least i haven't seen it done...and sure as fuck not in a contrived short story by heinlein that rests entirely on the (also) contrived main character(s). also, for what it's worth, it seems like nobody (seriously, nobody...not the writers, not the actors, maybe not even heinlein himself) has any fucking clue whether this main character is trans or intersex or both and what the intricacies of those identities would be. this is exploitative through and through. heinlein doesn't give a fuck about the main character aside from the fact that he needed the character to be able to mate with themself. (i have heard theories that heinlein himself was trans, but i personally believe this type of speculation to be harmful, and i don't buy into it.) society has always been obsessed with gender nonconforming folks, but in a fetishistic, voyeuristic, freak show kinda way...and this film (and story...at least as adapted to the screen) is no exception. just cringe cringe cringe interspersed with some nice production value and a tiny bit of suspense. i wish people would do their goddamned homework before trying to represent oppressed and marginalized characters from identities they are not a part of.
