Project Hail Mary (2026)

ok. this could have been honestly much better. there was a lot that worked here. the wordplay humour. amazing. thumbs down. gosling. great job tbh. had my emotions going. visually quite nice...(they did overuse the whole underexposed neon space vibe a bit too much). and honestly kids, that's what this film is riding on. sadly, that's it. dunno when this book was written (ok i think it's twenty twenty-one)...which is kinda shocking how much it rips off from both arrival and from interstellar. i haven't seen arrival in a long time and don't remember it, but this film is admittedly quite a bit better than interstellar. and, it also seems to be liked for the same reasons interstellar is liked. epic space journey, exceptional white man save humanity and all of galaxy add in cheap surface level sentimentality humans cry applaud fist my bump. while this is better than interstellar by quite a bit (at least this is fun, and has quite a bit better pacing), the science is just too hilariously bad to ignore. call me a grinch, but i just enjoy sci-fi that has some footing in physics. i'm not gonna list all the weird bs with this one, but how tf is he far enough away that messages take eleven+ years to reach earth but he can fly home in four years? that is off by several orders of magnitude and the entire story rests on those numbers. also, all samples are cute-looking goo and the world's best scientist doesn't balance his centrifuge. if you're making sci-fi movies, please at least involve one scientist for the love of all things beautiful and sacred. i also could have enjoyed this more if it wasn't blatant human exceptionalism propaganda. please. stop. telling the kids that no matter what colossal mess we wind up in there will be some straight white man who can fix it all for us. this is a super harmful message and it's almost like scamazon made this just to lull us all further into complacency about how colossally fucked we all are currently. maybe we'll drug some white dude and ship him off to space and he'll fall in love with a rock and save us all though. that would be cool.
