Punishment Park (1971)man, fuck the motherfucking pigs and fuck imperialist, white supremacist amerikkka. firstly, i wanna say it feels incorrect to label this mockumentary. the subject matter, and the delivery, both sit more along the lines of actual documentary. the fact that punishment park does not yet exist is irrelevant, as the film is about the core aspects of amerikkkan society that give rise to punishment park. the fascism and the capitalist white supremacist culture that give rise to the oppression of the vast majority of society already exist. punishment park is your rising grocery prices. punishment park is sweeps of homeless camps. punishment park is involuntary psychiatric commitment. punishment park is your nine to five job. punishment park is the government listening to all your phone calls. punishment park is billionaire health insurance ceos and millions of americans without access to basic healthcare. punishment park is amerikkkan imperialism. we are all already in punishment park. punishment park is all around us. truly, a very very easy five stars for the acting and for the editing. there are very few times anyone watching this would be able to tell it "isn't real". as propaganda, this is immaculate. from an art and writing standpoint, it is a little repetitive and a little too on the nose. it deserves to say everything it's saying...i just live and breathe these messages, so to me it was saying the same thing on loop at times. still fascinating, and i think the tribunal scenes worked really well as agitprop, and as a platform to deliver an anti-imperialist political message. honestly very unique. you get to watch people, all or most of whom are radicals, go through their tribunal and their sentencing and then punishment park itself. you get to see them wrestle with the whole violent vs. nonviolent dilemma. i am glad the film ended the way it did. that is the most honest way to conclude the story. anyone who feels the ending is cynical should absolutely study and learn more about amerikkkan history. i'll probably show this to quite a few people. glad this exists.
