The Shrouds (2024)

wow! honestly up there with existenz for me. how had i never heard of this one? incredibly thought provoking. first, i wanna say i have no idea what half of this film means. cronenberg took a deep dive into a lot of really existential questions here, exploring grief, and our relation to death...also exploring our relationship to tech, and specifically ai and surveillance. some of it felt half baked, for sure, and it feels maybe intentionally overloaded to keep us guessing where the story was going to go...because honestly phenomenal suspense. haven't been this on the edge of my seat in quite a while. kudos. acting, so strange and so good. loved our two leads. such weirdos. kinda diabolical to cast a sixty year old who looks like they're forty to star in your film about death and dying and grief. really neat meditation on anxiety and how we relate to change as well. some truly very, very pretty scenes. some neat graphics. loved the music, like, a lot a lot. the writing was honestly exquisite at several points. will almost certainly watch this again. maybe next time i'll actually understand it.
