We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists (2013)

totally fine documentary about a very strange, libertarian edgelord hacking "collective" some of us came to view as radical. gives a very good answer to the question "if anonymous is radical, why haven't they done anything to stop maga?" the answer has several prongs. first...this group is not organized. it shows how unreliable movements that refuse centralized organization are. the efficacy of the group then relies on enough people being in the right mood to agree about doing something on any given day and to remain in agreement long enough to do the thing. very rare. furthermore, the people who are most resistant to centralized organization, to nobody's surprise, also often lack any values aside from "i do what i want". this is not the way to sustain movements. anonymous got a reputation for being a radical force for good based on a couple of their prominent actions. a broken clock is right twice a day. it's wild to watch this group of largely terrible people and likely incels talk about what motivates them to action. shocker, it's largely trolling and just for fun. if something isn't fun, most of the group doesn't want to do it. truly a pretty fascinating case study about libertarian (or anarchist) group dynamics.
