Obsession (2025)

edit: you don't need to read the rest of the review, all that matters is that this film is a teenage boy's rape fantasy. (yes, i know curry is in his twenties.) curry barker should retire from film asap. original: worst of all, the writing allows viewers to come away thinking that nikki is the crazy one, the one at fault. if you don't believe me, scroll through reviews for this film (good and bad ones) and see how many people criticize nikki or paint her as a psycho. this is absolutely unforgivable writing. if you write something that paints a victim of coercion and serial rape as a psycho, and if that person is a woman, and especially if you are a man (let's be honest, a boy), then fuck you man. really, fuck you. in today's world, i'm completely not surprised this has four stars and a bounty of reviews calling it a 'masterpiece' or whatever. i'll tell you this is definitively not anywhere close to a masterpiece. some things that it actually is:

  • incel horror
  • toxic monogamy horror
  • misogynistic af
  • one-dimensional
  • inconsistent
  • too fucking long
  • abuse trauma-porn
  • written by a youtube comedian man baby things i can give this film credit for:
  • inde navarrette's acting, at times.... i would like to see her in more horror
  • some creative editing, at times this is based on a kinda okay concept, and that's basically where things end. first of all...he wishes for her to LOVE him... in whose twisted-ass mind does that wish lead to intense desire for control, coveting, posession? none of that is love, and the portrayal of the outcome of bear's wish says more about the mind of curry barker than anything else. love is basically not depicted anywhere in this film. the real horror is that lots of people think possession and control actually are love. second... he waits that long to attempt to make a second wish? unreal. complete plot hole. anyone else notice the wish didn't even make (actual) nikki 'love' him? it created a second consciousness within her that had nearly full control and left her actual self fully intact, imprisoned in her body? absolutely nothing about this writing works. get some therapy and pull your head out of your incel ass, curry barker.
