Deep Cover (1992)

to be totally fair, i can't really explain why this works, but it does. i was deeply skeptical at first. pigs as protagonists. some seemingly contrived racism play (that i think kinda makes its point and comes full circle by the end). borderline d.a.r.e. propaganda. jeff goldblum as a drug kingpin. but. the film has style. it's aware of what it's trying to do. i wouldn't call it camp, per se, but it's all a slight caricature of reality. it tells its story with swagger. we've got a bumpin soundtrack. we've got well-lit nighttime scenes. we've got truly absurd, homoerotic mob bosses. we've got some really interesting cuts, transitions, and camera angles. even jeff "chaos theory" goldblum gets more believable as the plot evolves. the ending kinda blows in some ways and also kinda works. there's a glimpse of truly good class analysis here. it is truly insane they didn't give larry fishburne more leading roles. that guy is hot af and such a fucking good actor.
