If you liked the previous movie, you’ll probably like this one. The main thing I want out of these movies is a good rollercoaster ride - and this delivers. Once again you can tell the people working on this movie have a deep love for Mario and Nintendo as a whole: While I wouldn’t exactly call the references tasteful, they didn’t get in the way of it functioning as a kids movie. I’m a big Yoshi fan and love what they did with him. Bowser Jr was fun. The lumas were adorable. It was cool to have Fox McCloud even though I’m not sure it was necessary. Rosalina is fucking bad ass - however… on that note - a thought that did not leave my mind the entire film: when I was in the 9th grade I had an assignment in english class to read and respond to an Anita Sarkisian article about the depiction of women in video games - and while Peach is a (relatively) fleshed out independent character - Rosalina exists in this movie to be kidnapped. They square the circle of her being a bad ass with needing her to be the bait by making it in defense of the lumas which - was cringe. Oh and the colorful visuals remained a treat. Especially in Dolby.
