年轻时玩使命召唤时就已经对车臣有印象了，好像一直在和俄罗斯打仗。读了这书才知道车臣自古以来是独立地区，还是伊斯兰国家，一直在大国之间夹缝求生，之后更是被俄罗斯帝国吞并，之后的苏联和现在的俄罗斯也不肯放过这地方，结下了多少血汗深仇，其中一次强制迁移造成一半国民死亡，令我目瞪口呆；苏联解体时车臣第一次独立，俄罗斯的入侵被挫败，民间也厌战；之后发生了一系列没有任何车臣组织宣布负责的恐怖袭击，俄罗斯民间反车臣情绪又高涨起来，在第二次车臣战争中俄罗斯大败车臣，扶植了劣迹斑斑的傀儡总统；普京也是在这次战争舞台上台的，其后大获全胜，进一步奠基了他的统治合法性；但车臣军阀也没被完全消灭，著名的莫斯科歌剧院人质事件就是车臣恐怖分子策划的；此外俄罗斯很多民间人士也想调查车臣到底什么回事，均死于可疑的暗杀，叶夫根尼·普里戈津的坠落原来早不是新鲜事了；此外这讲车臣的书还提到了俄乌战争，一看还是前年出版的，令我有活在历史中的恍惚。
