一八九四年，第一次中日战争北洋海军全军覆没，清朝和日本签订马关条约，日本本来要割走旅顺，但在西方列强干涉下没成。但后来清朝和俄罗斯签订《旅大租地条约》，辽东半岛租给俄罗斯二十五年，旅顺就被俄罗斯控制了，当时叫 Port Arthur，当时俄罗斯建设的西伯利亚大铁路，中东铁路，和南满支线能打通一条从圣彼得堡到旅顺的路。

一八六八年，日本发动明治维新；几十年后，一九〇四年日本突袭旅顺，对俄罗斯宣战，在付出了惨重的代价后大败俄罗斯军队，控制了满洲国领土；当时西方列强瞧不上日本，觉得俄罗斯作为欧洲强国必胜，俄日战争大概也是历史上欧洲和亚洲的第一次战争，结果日本势如破竹，都令美国总统 Theodore Roosevelt 吃惊；期间俄罗斯人民厌战抗议，遭到血腥镇压，史称 Bloody Sunday，这也后来预示了十年后的俄罗斯革命；日本把俄罗斯赶出满洲国领土后，也元气大伤，在中间人即美国总统 Roosevelt 安排下和俄罗斯签订和平条约，Roosevelt 还莫名其妙地拿了诺贝尔和平奖；日本进一步发动七七事变是后话了。

历史影响深远：十五万军人阵亡，附带二万中国平民死亡；西方列强看到俄罗斯如此弱不禁风，于是第一次世界大战站位就事先站好了；美国如此介入俄日战争，也是美国在大国外交上的出道；日本野心膨胀，开始窥觑中国的领土；俄罗斯政权的地位一落千丈，在 Bloody Sunday 的镇压导致一九一七年的俄罗斯革命。

我从前就知道俄日战争是在中国领土上打的，现在才发现如此深入中国地区的旅顺都俄罗斯控制过，我很吃惊，原来当时的中东铁路，以及哈尔滨国际地位是这么来的。
