a review of 欢迎来到我的世界
another reviewer put it as "Too sad to be funny. Too funny to be sad." and yeah, pretty much. pitch black comedy. this is from 2015, (with Wiig in her post-SNL indie era-- my favorite Wiig), a full year before Kanye's eventual, very public, very extended mental breakdown(s) and subsequent struggles with his mental health, a time that's seen him as both ringleader and main attraction of the worst circus you've been to. and while "Welcome to Me" doesn't fully engage on that scale, it does stand as a severly-underseen portrait of that increasingly common intersection of mental health, (social) media, celebrity, and the very blurry line between validation and exploitation. even if it doesn't know quite how to resolve its actual dilemma by the time the credits roll.
