Don't Look Up (2021)the funniest moment goes to timothée chalamet saying "ooh I FUCKING LOVE FINGERLING POTATOES". best line in the movie, best line reading in the movie. bless Timmy for that. the only two seconds in this film I'll keep with me. i like adam mckay. i like what he thinks he’s doing. i get it. "don’t look up" has a lot of issues. for example, the cameos that were fun and weird in "the big short" are kind of played out by now. the editing would be fun in, say, a short film that's a third of this movie's runtime-- when that editing is consistent in a 2+hr rant of a movie, it's exhausting and loses its flavor. it's a comedy that only kind of makes you laugh. it's a big conscious movie that only kind of makes you think. and it's a big middle finger at people that will actually NEVER watch or even think about this movie. the biggest problem with 'dont look up' is just how pointless it is. liberals will watch this movie and maybe go "I KNOW, RIGHT??" but also, only liberals (or people immediately left of center) will actually respond to this film with anything more than "well that was 2 hrs im not getting back". who else is this movie for?? anyone further left than that will call out its pointlessness, anyone on the right will dismiss it as "communist propaganda" without watching a single frame. and the so called elite he takes aim at will chuckle knowing that this movie will change nothing. but the people that do watch this movie, and do agree (or already agreed) will inevitably be left with a sense of "but what now?" adam mckay is constantly screaming at the viewer what they already know. "shit is fucked and it'll stay fucked as long as there's a whole half of a nation comitted to the big lie and bad faith actions." if mckay's intent is to reach across the aisle, he already failed by repelling anyone other than the narrow demographic this movie is really made for. but also, he provides little to no real path forward for the ones who will eat this shit up. what now? again, i like adam mckay. i appreciate the way he tries to ground big serious societal conversations in a language we can all speak: culture. sports. film. tv. celebrities popping up for 2 minutes. but 'dont look up' is a massive misfire on every single level.
