The Matrix Resurrections (2021)

fucking beautiful. its sincerity and honesty cut through its messy, hit and miss decisions. a new kind of miracle.

my one real nitpick about this film is an absolutely inconsequential one: that it's filmed digitally. i always loved how much texture is packed in the original trilogy between the production design and the celluloid. it makes it especially jarring  the first few times they cut to trilogy footage and back on the other hand, the fact that they were filmed with different formats almost works in its favor. the blurring of memory and "game", what's real and what's not even within the Matrix itself. it gives that old footage a distant familiarity that, as the film goes along, works more and more in its favor in this sense. again, the nittiest of picks.

-- the way Lana and team folded every context about this film, textually, subtextually, its place in pop culture and discourse, and as a product of Warner Bros is endlessly fascinating.
