His House (2020)

horror as we know it, is defined by anxieties within the larger cultural consciousness. however, those anxieties have largely been projected through a straight, white lens. jordan peele's legacy wasn't just making a "black" horror movie, it was grabbing the existing tool box of the genre and working it until it resembled a suitable engine for -his- anxieties. and just like jordan peele retooled the body snatchers movie to make Get Out and the home invasion movie to make US, we now see Remi Weekes apply the same repurposing of a classic horror subgenre, the haunted house, to tell a story that's not uniquely black, uniquely african or british. it's all of those with the spectre of survivor's guilt as the ghost haunting Bol and Rial. as a fan of horror, it's been my favorite development seeing female, black, brown and indigenous voices layer their perspective on top of known tropes and transforming them into stunning, specific experiences that educate and entertain in ways we've never seen before. His House is the next addition to this new Horror canon. One of the best debuts of the year and one of the most necessary stories on screen today.
