叙事顺序的重构制造了悬疑效果，但假如仅仅如此，不过是一个现代版的宫斗剧，而本片则靠精心设计的视听语言增强了艺术效果。本来是彻底黑暗的故事，但本片特意用了鲜艳绚丽的色彩，以扭曲变形的绘画作为道具，并间或以说唱作为旁白，构成了有点像古典舞台艺术（例如京剧、能剧）的表现主义色彩，从而如布莱希特眼中的梅兰芳那样，形成一定程度的间离效果，可以让观众保持一定程度的批判性，感受到电影中的故事并非理所应当的黑暗，而是人性的深度扭曲。这样，本片就不仅仅是一个普通的类型片了。
