Coffee conversations
Book · Review
Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern WorldAs an audiobook, it's a short listen. It was interesting enough for me to finish it in just three batches of mildly unfocused attention. There's a bit of history, a bit of experts voicing opinions, a bit of well thought puns and wordplays, and as always a bit off Michael Pollan's bullshit.
I'm not sure about the part where credit is given to the theory that caffeine had a major role in how Arabic mathematics and science were more advanced compared to European's. Could it be an instinctively human response from my part, to defend our human achievements as product of ingenuity instead of drug enhancement? Or could it be an instinctively Eurocentric view from Michael Pollan to seek contrived explanations for Europe not being the pioneers at literally every highly regarded achievement? I'll never know, because this is shoddy scientific journalism.
On a positive note, the book made me reflect on my relationship with coffee, and I'm glad I keep it as a small habit.
