中年男子山下拓郎（役所广司）在亲眼目睹了妻子与人偷情的场面后，于愤怒中刺死了妻子，锒铛入狱，八年后，获假释出狱的他在千叶县利根河边开了家小理发店，因为当年的遭遇，他对人很难再信任，平时唯有的交流对象是所养的鳗鱼。山下无意间救下自杀的桂子（清水美砂）后，后者为了报答他留在理发店里工作，并因性格开朗为他招来很多客人，而他的性格亦渐渐阳光起来。
山下的前狱友高崎出狱后，来到利根河附近从事垃圾回收的工作，为将山下的平静生活打乱，他开始不断地揭露山下的“丑行”，而桂子的原情人堂岛也于此时寻来，要带桂子和她的钱走，虽然深知一旦与人发生冲突就必须回到狱中继续服刑，山下还是为了保护桂子勇敢地采取了行动。

2001年9月11日、世界中を震撼させたアメリカ同時多発テロ事件。この悲劇を風化させてはならないという思いから、世界各国を代表する11人の映画監督が集結。11分9秒1フレームという共通の時間枠が与えられ、それぞれの文化や立場を背景に、独自の視点から短編を制作、1本の映画を完成させた。日本では事件の1年後にあたる2002年9月11日に、特別上映やテレビ放映が行われ、その後2003年に一般劇場公開が実現した。
今村昌平編の主人公は第二次大戦の戦場から故郷に還ってきた復員兵、勇吉。地を這いまわるヘビに変わってしまった彼は、村の家畜を襲い人々から嫌われてしまう。家を出た勇吉の行く先は…。
６月１０日、今村昌平監督の超短編映画「11・09・01 おとなしい日本人」 が完成、東宝録音スタジオにて試写会が行われました。 この映画は昨年９月１１日ニューヨークで起きた同時多発テロ事件をテーマに、世界を代表する１１人の監督が１１分９秒の短編映画を競作するプロジェクトです。フランスの映画会社ジャックエス社によれば、人類の平和や民族、寛容を基本テーマとするものだが、作品の内容は各監督に一任されるということです。
カンヌ映画祭で発表された監督は、 今村昌平(日本)、 クロード・ルルーシュ(フランス)、 ケン・ローチ(イギリス)、 ショーン・ペン(アメリカ)、 サミラ・マフマルバフ(イラン)、アモス・ギタイ(イスラエル)氏らの１１人。 １１作品は完成後に一本にまとめられ、 事件1周年の２００２年９月１１日に発表されるそうです。
今村作品の脚本は、「うなぎ」 「赤い橋の下のぬるい水」 を担当した天願大介。
出演は田口トモロヲ、麻生久美子、柄本明、倍賞美津子、 緒形拳、 丹波哲郎、 市原悦子、 役所広司など、カンヌグランプリ俳優や個性派俳優が並ぶ豪華なキャスティングです。
撮影は５月１０日にクランクイン、 栃木県の烏山町の藁葺きの農家を中心に行われました。
物語
終戦間近の北関東の山村。中国戦線から負傷して帰ってきた勇吉を迎えた家族の者は仰天した。勇吉は親兄弟はおろか若い女房とも口を利かず、土間の一隅に置かれた丸太組の檻に入り込み出てこないのだ。時折、人が近付くと長い舌をペロペロ出しシュッシュッと威嚇する・・・・勇吉は蛇になってしまったのだ。
お国のために戦ってきた勇者がどうして蛇などに・・・?
老いた両親は嘆き悲しみ、呆れ果てた若女房は肉体を持て余し寺の住職と関係を持つ。しかし、そうした人間界のことは勇吉にはどうでも良かった。彼は暗い土間や深い茂みの中を身をくねらして気持ち良さそうに這い廻っていた。
もう２度と戦場には戻りたくない。殺し合う人間より蛇の方が幸せだ。
しかし、そうした勇吉の願いは、ひょんなことから崩れさる・・・・・。

The film tells the story of four orphans living in an impoverished mining town. An adaptation of a best-selling book based on the diary of a ten-year-old zainichi (ethnic Korean Japanese) girl, it was one of the first films to deal with the subject of zainichi identity and struggles in Japan.

Following the Unreturned Soldier: Thailand is basically a long conversation. Imamura selects a few themes, mostly on the opposition between the three people he interviews (differences of class, background) and otherwise lets them reminisce about the horrors of war. Two out of three of the interviewees do most of the talking while the third one seems to have forgotten his native tongue (yet still seems loyal to the emperor). It's not as messy as it sounds but there are fleeting moments of anger that seep through (especially when the emperor is mentioned, the status of this figure being divisive among the interviewee). It should be seen if only as a preamble to Muhomatsu Returns Home.

Karayuki-san, the Making of a Prostitute is a 1975 Japanese film by director Shohei Imamura. It is a documentary on one of the Japanese "karayuki-san," who were women that were taken from their homes in Japan and used as prostitutes in the post-war period. Many of these women were told that they were doing this to support their families because of the extreme poverty that the war left much of Japan to live in. Imamura focuses on a particular such woman who was sent to Malaysia and never returned to Japan. Joan Mellen, in The Waves at Genji's Door, called this film, "Perhaps the most brilliant and feeling of Imamura's fine documentaries."

By going to the Philippines, Imamura comes to meet people living in an extreme poverty. He discovers very quickly that some communities are under the control of cruel & armed pirates. Imamura will come to meet those men in order to understand their position.
