房雄と初子は友人達とオートバイの遠乗りに出かけ、帰途、トラックにはねられてしまった。初子の母親とよ枝は、かけつけた病院で医師の畔柳と二十年振りで再会した。二人はかつて、親の反対をおし切って一緒になったが、とよ枝は実家に連れ戻され、畔柳は戦争に駆り出された。その時、お腹には初子が宿っていた。二年後とよ枝は理解のある宮崎と再婚した。そして宮崎が死んでからは小唄の師匠をして初子を女手一つで育てて来たのだ。初子は母の過去を知らなかった。退院した初子は、畔柳の世話でＳ・Ｋ出版社に勤めた。房雄の父はある会社の重役で、家柄の違いを理由に初子との交際を禁じていたが、房雄は取りあわなかった。その後、畔柳は小唄を習いに家にやって来た。母も浮々とした態度だった。それを不潔に思う初子は家を出る決心をした。同じ会社に勤める朝子も母親の再婚でショックを受けてアパートで一人暮しをしていたので彼女はそこに移った。とよ枝は初子に総てを打ち明けようとしたが、畔柳が九州の病院に行くことになり事情が変った。畔柳は初子をアパートへ訪ねてきて、「ママの家へ帰ってくれたまえ、僕は九州に行く。正直いうと僕はママが好きだ、結婚しようと思えば出来ないことでない。でも初子のママに対する理想像に疵をつけないことにする……ママと仲良くやってくれ」と頼んだ。初子は家に帰り平和な日日が流れた。初子は見習い社員から正社員になった。その夜、家ではとよ枝が御馳走をこしらえて待っていた。その食卓には三人分の食事が並んでおり、不思議がる初子にとよ枝は畔柳にも祝ってもらうのだと答えた。そしてとよ枝は畔柳が九州で死んだことを告げ、これまでの過去をすべて話した。初子はそれを聞くといきなりビールを一息に飲んだ。そして畔柳が好きだった小唄を唄い、畔柳の写真の前にビールを注ぐのだった。その小唄をとよ枝も泣きながら唄った。たまらなくなって初子は表へ飛びだし、房雄とオートバイを飛ばした。房雄は初子に結婚を申込んだ。

朝井松子は、京都光悦寺の茶会で、高谷幸二から彼の兄宗広が喀血して入院したことを知らされた。松子と宗広は、去年の秋京都で結ばれた。しかし宗広は、松子を捨て、巻子と結婚してしまった。松子の母道子は父の後妻だったが、義理の息子の敬助が戦死すると、彼の戦友紺野の許へ走った。鎌倉の朝井邸には、父と勤めをやめた松子が、ひっそり残された。穏かに晴れた冬のある日、松子は七里ヶ浜の療養所に入院している宗広を見舞った。途中、江ノ島電車の窓からとらえた父の親友木崎と若妻さよ子の明るい姿は、緊張した松子の心を和げた。しかし、病んでひねくれた宗広との対面は味気なく、心が凍る思いだった。春が訪れた。松子はブリジストン美術館で幸二に再会した。そこで幸二は、兄の夫婦関係が険悪なものになっていると語った。新緑の頃、松子の父が脳溢血で死んだ。孤独になった松子は、、木崎に家を買ってもらい、自分は木崎の家に引越した。一方、家を出奔した道子は、戸籍上では、依然父の妻であり紺野は彼女の遺産相続に期待していた。松子が、会社勤めをするようになったある日、宗広と松子の過去にこだわる巻子が、離婚したと告げに来た。その日、道子が紺野と別れて戻って来た。宗広の訃報が伝わったのは、それから間もなくのことだった。その頃京都は紅葉に染っていた。家に帰った松子が、そこに見たのは、どうしても離れられぬ紺野と道子の生身の姿だった。傷心の松子を幸二が光悦会に誘った。全山紅葉の鷹ヶ峰は、一年前と同じたたずまいだった。幸二は宗広の死が自殺だったこと、兄が最後まで松子を愛していたことを語った。松子は過去の月日を断ちきり、新しく生きようと決意するのだった。

年轻的学者早濑主税（鹤田浩二 饰）自幼失去父母，德高望重的酒井教授（森雅之 饰）将其收为义子，精心培育成人。早濑和艺妓阿莺（山本富士子 饰）私定终身，但苦于社会舆论迟迟不敢告诉义父。某夜阿莺在夜市被人诬陷盗窃，早濑赴警局将其领回，二人恋情由此曝光。

In eighth century China, the Emperor is grieving over the death of his wife. The Yang family wants to provide the Emperor with a consort so that they may consolidate their influence over the court. General An Lushan finds a distant relative working in their kitchen whom they groom to present to the Emperor. The Emperor falls in love with her and she becomes the Princess Yang Kwei-fei. The Yangs are then appointed important ministers, though An Lushan is not given the court position he covets. The ministers misuse their power so much that there is a popular revolt against the Yangs, fueled by An Lushan.

In post-war Japan, Michiko, a disillusioned young woman trapped in a loveless marriage, confides in her younger cousin, Tsutomo, and the two become close, but decide not to consummate their affair. He instead becomes involved with the flirtatious Tomiko, who is also conducting an affair with Michiko's husband. When Michiko finds that her husband has abandoned her, she decides to take her fate into her own hands.

After Japan's defeat in the war, the Anjo family lose their peerage and wealth. Since their mansion is due to pass into the hands of a creditor, the family holds one last ball before leaving.
