江户时代后期，池田屋事件后，江波三郎身怀为新撰组原局长叔叔芹泽鸭复仇的愿望、以奸细身份加入了新撰组，目睹低层武士因触犯幕府规则而遭残暴对待，从最初的震惊愤慨，到后来逐渐麻木，并以身不由己为麻醉自己的借口，逐步参与到这场血腥行动中，最终身份败露，仍逃不过杀戮。镜头风格多变，此片为加藤泰代表作之一。

A killer driven by revenge tracks down and murders the five women who sexually molested his mentally unstable best friend and drove him to suicide. 世界級鼓藝演出團體「鬼太鼓座」是1969年由創辦人「田耕」（本名田尻耕三）帶領一群醉心傳統太鼓藝術的青年樂手，成立的音樂修行團體，並根據「立地而奔、立地而鼓、立地而舞」的精神宗旨，讓太鼓擊樂與奔跑、舞蹈等肉體鍛鍊融為一體，成為貫徹物我合一的極限演出形式。氣吞山河的鬼太鼓座也使用竹笛、三味線、尺八、箏等婉轉幽遠的日式傳統樂器共奏，藉以達到陰陽調和，剛柔並濟的太極之境…
