以美女神官梅莉莎和盗贼米蕾儿和女战士吉妮组成的冒险队伍在野外的废墟中寻找遗迹及宝藏，但是苦于队伍中缺少魔法师而有诸多不便，于是她们到魔法学院所在的欧帆城寻找能够一起冒险的魔法师伙伴，然而，能够并且愿意随行的只有被米蕾儿称为变态和与吉妮在大街上抢着打架的——龙威。这种魔法师根本无法让人信服，于是她们就拒绝了龙威。正当梅莉莎向迈依利神寻求启示的时候，施错魔法的龙威掉到了她的面前成为神所赐予她的勇者。不得不接受神的旨意的梅莉莎一行，只能带着他上路冒险，并不断寻找能给他提升声望的机会以便于有朝一日能够正大光明地宣布龙威是她值得骄傲的勇者！
故事就此展开，但是基本上还是以城市为中心小规模的冒险，直到最后几集，王国的叛乱被龙威无意中瓦解后，立了功却无端担心国王处罚的一行人终于踏上了真正的冒险之路。
作为罗德岛的作者而成为无人不知的水野良，在这部作品中能很明显的看出其背景设定等方面与罗德岛的相似之处，然而，他完全颠覆了在罗德岛中作为勇者和作为魔法师的设定（当然，比起魔法提琴手的BT来还是望尘莫及）该作中的魔法师一反以往乃至正统小说如《龙枪》中魔法师身体虚弱的形象，满身肌肉的龙威毫无身为魔法师在队伍中的自觉，反而在施法时不是施到一半忘了下文去翻书，就是背错了魔法总是把爆破魔法当作其他魔法而炸的自己人到处逃窜，最经常的就是条件反射般用拳头和剑作为第一武器留下其他人在后方作援助，甚至出现了第一回冒险就把魔杖当武器砸向敌人以至于失去了施法道具而在其后的好几回中不能施展法术，总之如果不是动画的题目不是《魔法战士》的话几乎就让人忘记了他的本职是法师。其他人物的搞笑配合在动画中也层出不穷，龙威的古板而又想扬名的魔法学院的导师、梅莉莎的光有漂亮外表只依靠魔剑才能战斗经常被打的只剩内裤裸奔的未婚夫、米蕾儿装钱的罐子和省钱买下的闹鬼的房子等等等等，即使在决战关头也不缺乏幽默的片段。
