「風の中の子供」に続く坪田譲治の“善太と三平”ものの映画化作品。監督は前作同様に天才・清水宏である。主人公の善太・三平の兄弟とその家族は、役名はもちろん配役まで前作と同じ。「風の中の子供」は夏休みの間だけの話であったが、本作品は題名の示す通り2部から成る1年間の物語である。前編では、仲間の金太郎の父に借金をした病気の父親を助けるため、善太と三平がけなげに働くが、そのかいもなく父が死に至るまで。後編では祖父母のもとに引きとられた善太・三平と彼らの仲間・金太郎の友情が描かれる。主人公の兄弟を演ずる葉山正雄と爆弾小僧が素晴らしく、また詩情を漂わせた撮影も美しい佳編。
