夕子（松坂庆子 饰）出生于一个贫困的家庭之中，为了给妈妈看病和养活全家人的生计，不得不在父亲的带领下被自卖于青楼之中，成为了京都五番町里夕雾楼的妓女。在老板的栽培之下，凭借着自己的美貌与智慧，夕子一步一步的向上爬，最终成为了整个五番町的头牌。可是，即使每天有无数的男人拜倒在自己的石榴裙下，夕子还是对自己的青梅竹马正顺（奥田瑛二 饰）念念不忘。而此刻的正顺正在京都凤阁寺修行。
终于，夕子和正顺再度获得了联系，在夕子的邀请下，正顺常常前往夕雾楼同夕子幽会。在正顺的眼里，夕子并不是一个出卖身体的妓女，而夕子也并未从正顺那里要钱。两人之间的感情在压抑中开始逐渐升温，但他们却都没有更好的出路可以选择……
