NHK大河ドラマ第16作。
為政者ではなく庶民の側から歴史をとらえるというコンセプトのもと、戦国時代の自由都市"堺"に生きた半伝説的な商人呂宋助左衛門の生涯を描いたドラマ。信長、秀吉、家康といった実在の英雄的人物もむろん登場するが、主人公助左衛門と深く関わる主要な人物として石川五右衛門、杉谷善住坊というこれまた出生の定かでない伝承の人物が活躍。従来の正統派戦国ものには見られなかった独自の世界観を描き出すことに成功した。また、このドラマには経済という視点が盛り込まれており、原作を経済畑の作家城山三郎が書き下ろし、脚本家の市川森一とともに構想に参画した点も注目される。さらに付け加えるなら、大河として海外ロケが組まれたのもこの作品が最初である。

クリスマス・イヴの夜、すずは相棒リュウの為にケーキを盗み、販売員に捕まってしまう。人々の嘲りと同情の視線の中、すずを助けたのは、サーカスの団長・磯貝であった。しかし彼は、身寄りのない子供たちを安く買っては、団員としてこき使っている悪党で、すずもまたそのサーカス小屋に連れて行かれるのだった。ところが、その小屋にはすずの意地悪な叔母・京子と、その娘・真弓がいた。真弓たちのいじめに遭うすず。しかし、そんな彼女に優しく接する少女がいた。その少女の名は恵。実の兄のように慕っている稔という青年と共に、サーカスの花形である空中ブランコ乗りとして活躍している少女だ。だが、恵は生れつき心臓が弱く、練習中に倒れてしまう。そんな彼女を見て稔とすずは、稔の実の父親であるらしい、県会議員の南条に恵の手術代を借りに彼の元を訪れるが、けんもほろろに取り合ってもくれなかった。そこで、医師・黒崎に頼むことを思いついたすずは、彼の病院へリュウを走らせ、自分は恵の代わりを務めようと、稔の指導の下、空中ブランコの練習に励むのだった。「いそがいサーカス」の公演初日、リュウに案内されてやって来た黒崎によって恵の応急手術が行われた。恵は一命をとりとめ、すずも空中ブランコを成功させる。しかし、中央政界への進出をもくろんでいる南条にとって、自分の過去の汚点となる稔と恵は邪魔な存在。そこで、恵が入院した病院の医師を買収して、恵を殺害した南条は、続いて稔とすずをサーカスのテントごと、事故にみせかけて焼死させようと火を放つ。だがその時、稔が昔愛した女との間に出来た子であることを知った南条は、稔を救おうとして自らの命を落としてしまう。その後、稔は別のサーカスに入団し、すずはまたリュウと共に孤独な生活に帰っていくのだった。

The Katakuri family has just opened their guest house in the mountains. Unfortunately their first guest commits suicide and in order to avoid trouble they decide to bury him in the backyard. Things get way more complicated when their second guest, a famous sumo wrestler, dies while having sex with his underage girlfriend and the grave behind the house starts to fill up more and more.
