1891年，不莱梅港市。作为船长的儿子，年轻的海因里希布莱克曼的脚下拥有着全世界，他渴望周游世界去寻找新的冒险机会，但是他究竟应该去哪？一天他正在圣诞集市上闲逛，就在他沉思的时候，他突然听到了低音管的声音。一位街头卖艺者正演奏着动听却悲伤的俄罗斯歌曲…终于他知道了自己该前往何方。
21岁以后海因里希成为了莫斯科非常有影响力的银行家，他结了婚并且拥有了四个儿子，他的妻子也期待着他们的第五个孩子的降生。海因里希是一个非常恪守原则的人，他教育自己的孩子要遵守人道主义价值观。不久以后，第一次世界大战爆发，对于身在俄罗斯的德国人来说所有事情都随之发生了改变，他们一下子被看成了敌人。海因里希使用了出入通行证，顺利的将自己的妻子和五个孩子送到了瑞典，可他自己却被出卖，就在他即将离开的最后一刻被抓，并且被流放到了乌拉山。背井离乡到韦加卡韦特卢加地区的日子并不好过，海因里希的心里彻底的凉了，非常痛苦，长时间的战争来势凶猛，最坏的也是唯一的生存机会就是永远被监禁在这里。
一天司令官将海因里希送回了莫斯科并且命令他为军队筹款，同时也对他发出警告，如果海因里希试图逃跑，他必死无疑。曾经极富盛名的银行家，现在年老体衰，衣衫褴褛的回到了莫斯科。他的别墅被抢占，成为了军队的医院，但是他至少可以收到安娜从瑞典寄来的信件。他满含热泪的读着家书……就在这个时候，他听到了低音管的声音。他跑到街上，找到了这个演奏的人，这个人就是在不莱梅港市演奏俄罗斯歌曲的街头艺人。而正是这位街头艺人让他前往莫斯科。海因里希把这次奇迹般的相遇看做是一种预兆，于是他决定独自一人不顾一切，奋不顾身的前往瑞典……
