Gisela sitzt nach einem Oberschenkelhalsbruch im Rollstuhl und ist auf Hilfe angewiesen. Sehr zum Verdruss seiner Frau Nina nimmt es Sohn Matthias auf sich, seine Mutter im Kreis der Familie zu pflegen. Zwar verspricht er, dass es nur vorübergehend ist, doch da Nina ihre Schwiegermutter nur als Schreckschraube kennt, fällt es ihr dennoch schwer, sich mit der Situation anzufreunden. Der zehnjährige Enkel Tom findet dann aber ein altes Foto, auf dem die Oma als glückliche Frau zu sehen ist. Seinen Vater bringt das auf eine Idee: Er spielt Gisela mit anonymen Liebesbriefen einen Liebhaber vor, um ihr wieder zu neuem Lebensmut zu verhelfen. Tatsächlich blüht Gisela wieder auf, doch es dauert nicht lange, bis der Plan zu allerlei Schwierigkeiten führt...
