The dreams keep coming. I can't seem to stop them or shut them out. In the dreams, I see a second real world where the dead appear to me. Now I know that the dead live on. [...] I have felt a presence of evil and find comfort in its familiarity. - Jason Wynn. This second season is quite different from the previous. The first thing to notice is that the budget was probably cut. There's a lot more black, and some effects, like rain and fire, are not drawn but rather overlayed as a video on top of the animation. However, I feel like it probably forced the team to come up with some creative solutions. Because the whole season feels less structured and more experimental. There's a lot more unexpected stuff. Like the first episode is almost entirely a confrontation between the protagonist and one of his old "friends". In one of the later episodes a character appears, who keeps talking about some supernatural being that orders him around. Yet we never get to learn if it exists anywhere beyond his mind. It could be Maelbolgia, whom we've heard about throughout all the 12 episodes but haven't ever seen him (except for a glimpse early on). It gives him this omnipresent feeling, like some ancient chthonic evil is always watching everything and pulling the strings. I mentioned in my review of the first season how well the atmosphere was established, and I think this one improves upon it. Though, since it's very bleak, I think some might find it too depressing. In this season we see a much stronger focus on psychology. A lot of the older characters get some development. Spawn himself goes back on some of the personal growth but does it in a very natural way, reflecting the cyclicity of life. Again his behaviour is a great representation of the human psyche. It shows how everything can crumble. How even the things that feel so right at one moment, can be reverted. And how the pain, much like Maelbolgia, is omnipresent in the shadows, always ready to plunge you back into its dark embrace. In the end, some might feel that the story in this season was a bit stagnant. I advise you to look at this more as a character study than anything. Because in that regard it really shines. Plotwise, it takes a step back, only to make a new, stronger step forward. So by the end, you might be left unsatisfied, but with a better understanding of this universe and its characters. It really is a unique approach to this genre and format.
