I am downright delighted to announce that my latest book, YOU DESERVE A TECH UNION, has a brand new look. I really love it, and I hope you do too.
Here’s a look at what’s changed and—maybe more importantly—what’s stayed the same:

Some may have noticed I'd changed to using the Scribbles blogging platform now.
I get the feeling it's not as popular as some of the other services I see recommended whenever someone asks about independent blogging platforms, and I can't work out why. There have been plenty of author-side improvements recently, so I think it deserves a mention in the same breath as things like Pika and Pagecord.
Anyway, trying not to make this post seem like an ad, so look for yourself if you want, or not, I'm not your Dad and not bothered either way.

Weeknotes are up! It was my birthday this week so a lot more going out than usual, and a bunch of rather sad and frustrating news.
PSA for people with #Wordpress blogs: do you know that you can turn off comments on old posts?
In the last few months I have noticed a significant uptick in spammy comments on my Wordpress blogs (I have 4).
Well there is a way to remedy all that: you can simply turn off comments on old blog posts by going to:
Settings -> Discussion -> and checking "Automatically close comments on old posts"
(You can even determine the "oldness" of posts, for example, older than 7 days, 14 days... anything you'd like)
Enabling this made all the difference for me. I could not recommend it more.
End of my PSA 🤗
Have a great day everyone!

Hey fediverse, happy Monday, and also happy #WorldBlogDay!
Here's a short post from 2024 to celebrate blogs, and perhaps inspire you to start your own.
Are you one of those people who say "I'd rather read your crappy original writing than something generated by AI?" Now's the time to put your money where your mouth is!
I, without any previous experience, wrote 100 different short stories, around 1,000 words each, for a total of over 105,000 words! Find them on my #blog, or don't; it's a free country!

"Typically, a weblog is a small web site, usually maintained by one person that is updated on a regular basis and has a high concentration of repeat visitors. Weblogs often are highly focused around a singular subject, an underlying theme or unifying concept."
I just published a custom comment system that I built for my blog! And I wrote a blog post to go alongside it. Check it out, and leave a comment!

Here's to a new era [of my blog] :)
I put together a few words on the importance of small web communities, and communities in general.

"By the end of 2002, blogging had blossomed into a thriving ecosystem of colourful personal sites that interconnected to each other via RSS, trackback and blogrolls."
This is a nice list of blogging platforms that highlights free options. Now you really have no excuse not to give blogging a try!
Okay really quick and rough version, but a good start. This is my progress on my Fediverse for Photographers blog.
Any input and additions appreciated! I still have more to add from the suggestions provided the other day.

Fine, a belated #introduction. Still searching for my people here. Encountering too many memes. I like levity in my timeline, but seldom like that. Where are the shitposters? The wise-crackers? The dry wits?
Interested in #film / #movies, #books (working on a project to get everything on my shelves read), #blogging, #vlogging, #birding, and #walking (boring).
Raised in #Iowa, live in #Chicago. Would love to find other folks here, but also interested in those in far-flung locales.
In the latest post in my history of blogging and RSS series, I look at the emergence of the blogosphere in 2002 — a thriving ecosystem of colourful personal sites that interconnected to each other via RSS, trackback and blogrolls. 2002 also saw the debut of RSS 2.0, Technorati and Google News. https://cybercultural.com/p/blogs-rss-2002/ #InternetHistory #Blogging
