Why on earth do publishers do this? It drives me nuts!

Why not just pick a book size and keep it consistent for the whole series?

The decision to strip chapters from books that had already won the approval of the state’s Republican-controlled board of education represents an escalation in how local school boards run by ideological conservatives influence what children learn.

A special shoutout to The New York Review of Books which has just started using the Fediverse:

➡️ @nybooks

The NYRB is a celebrated magazine on literature, politics, arts, ideas & current events.

They've just started posting, so their profile may look blank to your server. Follow them and their posts will start showing up on your server too 🙂

(By the way, NYRB has no connection to the New York Times Book Review, they just have similar names.)

Very late start, but it's time for a 2026 thread of books I read. Heather Fawcett was excellent (although book 1 was better). Andrew Cartmel was on form. Elle Hartford was sweet seashorecore (if that's a thing!) & Laura Laakso was an excellent start to a new to me crime fantasy series with an mc with chronic pain. #amreading #books #bookstodon

It is that time of year, so I thought I’d mention that my book YOU DESERVE A TECH UNION is very much a thing you can buy for any tech workers in your life. Or yourself!

You can buy it just about anywhere books are sold, or ask your library to grab a copy! https://ethanmarcotte.com/books/you-deserve-a-tech-union/

Three bright red copies of the book “You Deserve a Tech Union” are stacked on a gray wooden surface. The stack is flared slightly, so that the corners of the lower books are peeking out from below.

ALT

Screenshot of three testimonials, titled “Praise for You Deserve a Tech Union”.

Peter Olney, retired organizing director of the ILWU and the co-editor of Labor Power and Strategy, described the book as, “A wonderful back-pocket book, perfect for any tech worker interested in powering up and getting a union.”

The Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee described the book as “A compelling and galvanizing read — not just for tech workers, but for anyone who is union-curious. ”

Nozlee Samadzadeh, a member of the New York Times Tech Guild, said, “ You Deserve a Tech Union is a how-to guide, a history lesson, and a manifesto all in one. Ethan Marcotte starts by laying out the case for unionization in tech, and ends with a rallying cry for using our power as workers. I wish we’d had this book as we organized the New York Times Tech Guild.”

Just finished this one.

A couple of factual inaccuracies (no, 'G' in physics does not mean 100 times your weight - it is earth's gravitational constant 'g' in this context, and yes, chimps do actually teach one another), plus some idiocy no fault of the author (chimps don't understand 'zero' dear researchers, true, but neither did humans until a millennium or so ago)...

But overall, a well-researched informative read - highly recommend.

The cover of Jon Cohen's 'Almost Chimpanzee' subtitled 'Redrawing the Lines that Separate Us from Them'.

The title and subtitle are cream and red respectively, displayed over the image of a chimp seen from behind, his dark fur shimmering in silhouette against a black background, the formidable compact musculature of his neck and shoulders as striking as the pale tips of his ears.

A younger but fully grown-ass person working behind the counter of a bookshop had to ask me how to spell 'traitor' this afternoon.

Tell me our brains aren't being turned to shit by social media and the endless AI-style lazy paths so accessible in the first world today.

Was looking for this, btw (and they had it):

I'm pinning the list of specifically sapphic (not just queer) fantasy (not sci-fi or urban fantasy) novels I've read and recommend, also because I'm starting to get trouble keeping track of this list myselves so I want it somewhere I can edit. The big reveal…

So I wrote up a lot of these little stories a few years ago but I’ve added some new ones, cleaned it all up and now I’m the happiest with it that I’ve ever been. You can definitely get a copy in time for Christmas, if you’re so inclined…

Just a quick reminder...

If you’ve read my book, 'Drystone - A Life Rebuilt' I’d be grateful if you left a review wherever you prefer.

This isn’t a plea for 5 star ratings; it’s a request for honesty. Books are personal: I dislike plenty, feel neutral about many, and love a few. Whatever your response, reviews really help. A wall of 5-stars is wonderful, but it can also feel suspicious to readers. A mix of perspectives shows the book is being read seriously.
