The police found seventeen photographs of me sleeping.
They asked who took them.
I recognized the bedroom.
I recognized the dates.
What I didn’t recognize was the child lying beside me.
In the last photo, I was gone.
He was wearing my face.

The forest was quiet this morning.
Then I noticed the birds were still there.
All of them.
Facing the same tree.

The house has been quiet for hours.
Then footsteps begin upstairs, slow and heavy enough to make the ceiling creak.
They cross the room above you, stop directly over your head, and remain there for several seconds.
Then they start moving again, even though this time they are coming from inside the wall.
