Want to Report on Homelessness? Here’s What Our Sources Taught Us About Engaging Responsibly.
—
Homelessness is at a record high, and there are many investigative stories to tell. We’ve compiled some of the tips and lessons we learned from our sources for other reporters pursuing this coverage.
On Monday, Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States, and the news will come at us thick and fast. So for today’s #NewstodonFriday, we’re trying our level best to avoid stories that are directly about Trump. That doesn’t mean it’s all unicorns and rainbows — we’re still in this timeline, after all — but there’s some lighter fare in there to bring a smile before the weekend. The stories here come from newsrooms that have an active presence in the fediverse, plus a couple of our own desks. We encourage you to support independent media by following the accounts here, boosting their stories, and donating money and subscribing if you can. Buckle up, folks!

Our team works hard every day to create a safe environment for the people who choose to spend time here, and when guidelines are violated, we take action.
This is our commitment to our community, but we understand it is also our responsibility. Here's a blogpost to explain more.

Happy #NewstodonFriday! If you’re absolutely averse to seeing coverage of the U.S. election and Donald Trump, you might want to look away now — or scroll quickly. If you can bear to linger, you’ll find important stories about Elon Musk’s political funding, why the media aren’t talking about the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, the push to get out the Native vote, and what happened after Hurricane Maria. Interspersed, there's an investigation into the state of criminal prosecution in Anchorage, two inspiring stories on assistive technology, a look at whether Alan Shepard hit three golf balls on the moon, and some gorgeous photos, including bracken that looks like Jabba the Hutt. To remind you, our goal with this thread is to highlight the work of newsrooms and individuals that maintain an active presence in the fediverse. Follow their accounts, click on their stories, donate and subscribe, and interact in the comments below.

Forward-thinking journalists are not letting the “media apocalypse” happen to them. Instead, they’re doing the work that arguably has been most critical all along: building direct connections with their readers. @404mediaco's @jasonkoebler and @ProPublica's @ben join fediverse futurist @mike for a conversation about the discovery and sustainability of quality journalism.

Happy #NewstodonFriday! We really really wanted to keep it light, breezy and election-free this week. But if democracy dies in darkness, we must celebrate those newsrooms and reporters that are committed to shedding light.
This week, we are featuring news on how the plastics industry would welcome a second Trump administration, but teachers would loathe one. Texas Observer has a deeply reported story on the way mass deportations would devastate their state. New Hampshire’s election workers are under threat, but they’re standing up. An overlooked item on the Arizona ballot? Policy on how the state would treat unhoused people. A tech story on everyone’s favorite online retailer and how it says it has a First Amendment right to union bust. There’s a look at why people continue to support Donald Trump, despite the… everything. And sprinkled in, find articles on how kids become bilingual, the rise of Scientology in Ukraine, specimen collections in museums, clever cats, and zombie movies. Please support these newsrooms who have an active presence in the fediverse — give money, subscribe, read, share and comment.

This time next week, the U.S. will have voted. Anyone else feel sick?! This is our regular #NewstodonFriday thread, which highlights the newsrooms and reporters who have an active presence in the fediverse. Inevitably, we have political stories and politics-adjacent stories, along with some lighter fare, and some that straddle the two (@TexasObserver’s story on a new Greg Abbott musical fits perfectly into that category). Please check out the stories, follow the publications, click on the stories, subscribe, donate and otherwise support if you can. See you on the other side.

It’s been a week. Oh boy, has it been a week. Here’s our #NewstodonFriday thread of stories from the independent newsrooms that have made a home for themselves in the fediverse, plus a couple of important stories that our own desks shared. As always, please read and boost the stories in this thread, and support the brilliant newsrooms that produce them. And do share in the comments any stories or moments that have brought you joy in the past week. Or dog photos — those would be good too!

Last week, we asked #NewstodonFriday readers if anyone else felt sick at the thought of the U.S. election, and here we are. Not much levity in this week’s thread, but rather stories on the state of journalism and media, how different outlets plan to tackle the Trump administration, and even one about how political polarization can literally make you sick. We’ve sprinkled a little lighter fare in there, including a beautiful Tiny Desk concert from Meshell Ndegeocello (close your eyes and scroll to the bottom if you can’t bear to read any news). Please check out the stories, follow the publications, click on the stories, subscribe, donate and otherwise support if you can. Independent media matters now, more than ever.

Reposting my #introduction, since I'm seeing a lot of fresh faces recently. I'm an associate professor at UMass Amherst, where I teach about #journalism and #MediaIndustries. My research focuses on media distribution and, occasionally, dysfunction in the adtech industry.
I also co-edit a book series on the civic impacts of media distribution for The MIT Press. Feel free to hit me up if you're working on a relevant project!

If you're going to post a link, people, don't just quote the freaking headline, make some effort to tell folks what you're asking them to click through to. The contents, not the clickbait, please.
I'd also say I'm less inclined to click into "news stories" that are little more than tit-for-tat back and forth between people. Tell me what they're doing, not what they're saying. And if they're not doing anything, I don't need commentary on that. I'm not in this for the yuks or self-righteousness.
But do give us the links if you're giving a quote. Show your work.
We're turning 70, y'all! 🤠
On Tuesday, December 3, celebrate the Texas Observer at the legendary Scholz Garten in downtown Austin! Here's everything you need to know to join the party, and support our work: https://www.texasobserver.org/a-texas-miracle-the-observer-is-turning-70/

It’s #NewstodonFriday again, where we share a thread of stories from the independent newsrooms that have a presence in the fediverse, plus a couple of articles that our own editorial desks shared. This week we discovered yet another brilliant publication is here: @msfreepress. If there are any newsrooms or journos you’d like to put on our radar, please tell us in the comments — and don’t forget to read and boost the stories in this thread, donate to publishers, and support independent media doing incredible, brave, important work.

Considering the recent trend toward media monopoly, I hope you won't mind me shamelessly promoting my newsletter, Brief Ecology. It's part #journalism, part #scicomm, part #political education. It's also free to read.

What happened to February? The shortest month seemed shorter than ever this year — even though January feels very long ago. This #NewstodonFriday, to counter the doom and the gloom, we’re watching Jane Fonda’s SAG Awards acceptance speech on repeat (it’s the last item in this thread). Please do read and boost the whole thread of stories from newsrooms with a presence in the fediverse. It makes a difference to our brave independent media friends.
