When #KusamaYayoi’s pumpkin on Naoshima was blown into the sea during a typhoon, I (metaphorically) felt that. I had a postcard of it from a previous visit to Naoshima Art Island, so I set to work modifying it.

The experience of this painting is strikingly different, depending on the circumstances you view it… which also feels right.

The piece with soft, indirect light is mostly vibrant blues and silver greys against the gold and black pumpkin, with lots of dark silvery grey seafoam in the foreground and buffeting the sculpture which is turned sideways here. I’ve since often taken up adding at least some contrast that’s visible all the time regardless of lighting conditions, but for this piece I think it metaphorically works to have the sea be much more subtle, and the yellow vs abstract blue layers the focus when viewed like this.
