linux
🐧 Milá komunito,
máme na vás velkou prosbu
V říjnu jedeme na LinuxDays – chceme tam osobně ukázat OSCloud lidem, co mají blízko k Linuxu, open source a Fediverse. A rádi bychom vás poprosili o pomoc.
Hello everyone! Jim here.
I just wanted to let you know that I’ll be at openSUSE.Asia Summit 2026 as a speaker. My topic is going to be “Getting the next generation to learn the GNU/Linux system”. I’ll be sharing all the info you need to know about learning to use GNU/Linux and how to reduce your dependency on proprietary software and operating systems (like Microsoft Windows and others).
Join us at the openSUSE Asia Summit 2026 in the Convention Hall at UIN Sunan Kalijaga in Yogyakarta on 3rd and 4th October. Also, come to Room 2 on the first day to learn about GNU/Linux with me — it’ll be a great learning opportunity! Scan the QR code in the image or visit the link below to secure your ticket for the summit.

See you in Yogyakarta at the summit!
On 1.6 the icons were extremely tiny, and for whatever reason it started with zero panes active. <-- Once I figured out how to set some panes and not have to F2/F3 all the time, life got easier.
Luckily it seems like 1.7 has much better defaults and a nicer UI

I have decided to shut down my #mastodon instance, and all my public facing web services.
This will happen in 3 months time, on November 29, 2026, to allow everyone to backup and migrate.
The reason for this is that I can no longer trust:
- the #Linux kernel
- #Debian
- rails
- most #Foss projects
Additionally, I'm basically out of storage, it is unaffordable to purchase more, and no one is interested in donating to help.
Our bastion of free computing has been poisoned by fascist gen ai slop, and basically NONE of it can be trusted anymore.
It's impossible to vet slop from an ecosystem that is welcoming of it.
This makes it nearly impossible to update my systems, which makes it harder to pretend it's even remotely secure.
I'm fucking devestated - gutted by what has happened to computing, and I just do not have the resources to keep fighting.
Fuck all you #LLM boosters into the sun. May you learn the folly of your way and DO SOMETHING TO FIX IT!

New blog post: I explain how Qualcomm broke linux kvm virtualization on Arduino Uno Q/QRB2210, and what I did to bring it back.
Somehow, KOrgainzer has been the most reliable calendar app out of all the linux ones I've tried.

I just lost my job today, so here we go..
I'm a ~30 years Sysadmin/DevOps/Server Shepard/Graybeard whatever its called now UNIX nerd.
Looking for work doing UNIX'y stuff. I mostly do automation, and have avoided working with AI and Kubernetes (though I have a bit of k8s experience at two jobs, I just prefer "the old way")
Chef, Puppet, Cfengine, Ansible, Shell scripts, etc.
I've built Linux distributions, and automation tools. Having worked at Redhat, TurboLinux, Penguin Computing, Salesforce, and Chef.
Built and maintained monitoring systems, checks, and lived the on-call life.
Built and managed CI systems, and Pipelines.
I've written and maintained software in Ruby, Python, and Shell. I've dabbled in just about every other programming language you'll find on a UNIX system.
I have spent a lot of time with *BSD, Solaris, IRIX, and Linux, and to a lesser extent HPUX, and AIX.
If its sysadmin work on a UNIX, I've likely done it.

Next step, installing #Linux on systems. Digital sovereignty doesn't stop at the office suite; the operating system is still a dependency underneath. What distributions are primed to be the #foundation once the office suite is sorted? #openSUSE #Fedora #Debian #Ubuntu https://tuta.com/blog/countries-ditching-microsoft-choosing-linux-digital-sovereignty

“#Flathub is now accepting AI slop”
the Flathub reviewers have blocked over 1,000 slop apps in 2026 alone. that’s half of the verified app count.
close to a quarter of the store could have been ensloppified by now!
if you want to know what a slopnami looks like, just have a look at this link:

Le 18 décembre 2024, #MédecinsSansFrontières appellait les États, en particulier les plus proches alliés d'Israël, à mettre fin à leur soutien inconditionnel à Israël et à s'acquitter de leur obligation de prévenir un #Génocide à Gaza.
Oui, il a un #Génocide à #Gaza et la France, l'Europe, sont complices. Et le silence rend complice.

I thought korganize would at least be reliable. It isn’t. Akonadi behaves in ways I don’t understand. Thunderbird doesn’t like editing Google Calendar. I’m going full circle back to gnome calendar feeling stupid for complaining that it was “too barebones”.
The current more reliable sync I managed to set up is vdirsyncer.
I’m not expecting fantastical/cardhop level applications here but this is maddening.

Looking for advice from all you qualifed* Linux nerds: What Linux distro are we using these days to minimize the amount of AI slop and fascism embedded in your OS?
I was a Debian girl back when I was a young lad and reliable wifi on Linux was but a dream. Ubuntu has been my daily driver for over a decade, but it's accumulated annoyances have my looking for change.
This will be going on a new-to-me Thinkpad from the early 2020's, full drive encryption is an obvious must, as well as decent support for Blender, Godot, and Kitra.
*Qualifications for this solicited advice require participants be carbon-based lifeform(s) with at least one intersectionally queer friend. This specifically excludes meat proxies, weird little guys of foss, and anyone who thinks tech needs anymore advocates for the devil.
Tl;dr: I've got a strong technical background and can compare/contrast deep technical specs all day, I want recommendations from people based on their personal experience

We spent the last 6 months polishing the experience, to make it more accessible and more user-friendly. Unlike the current tech industry, we go slow and fix things! (1/3)
If you REALLY want to stick it to companies knowingly funding fashtech, consider becoming a Friend of @gnome! There’s a convenient $50/month option in case you’re not planning to drop $3 million on something else. Or, you know, any amount helps. 😉
