I stopped using #Google and any other #bigtech products a long, long time ago (2015-ish? maybe earlier). It's time for everyone else to move away too, and this includes #Apple, Microslop (#Microsoft), #Meta, #Amazon and many others.
ONLY use #openSource products:
- use #linux
- use degoogled Android ROMs like @GrapheneOS, and many others for any Android phone
- use @fdroidorg as your store
- use #OpenStreetMap clients (like @organicmaps)

Random #SelfHosting #Linux question: I have a USB drive attached to my PC. It's mounted, but the only time I read from/write to it is at midnight when I make a backup. Still, I can hear it spinning up and down throughout the day. Is there a way to monitor and see which processes access the drive or its mount point?

I’ve been running Linux off and on for years. But with a break from any meaningful experimentation since I bought my Steam Deck, I decided it was time for something new.
So I did the cliché thing and bought a used Thinkpad on eBay to install Linux on. Here’s my initial experience, with some backstory about my journey until now.

I recently graduated from my #SysAdmin apprenticeship and I am looking for an entry position in the field of #Linux/ #Networking Administration/Engineering or #DevOps in #NRW, #Germany (ideally around #Düsseldorf), or Remote.
As part of the apprenticeship I conducted an internship at a Neuroscience Institute of Research Centre Juelich, where I accomplished my project of automating #OpenBSD routers using #pyinfra #GitOps.

Linus Torvalds has repeatedly said that LLMs are "clearly useful" and "just a tool" and that the kernel maintainers will use LLMs for Linux development.
He fails to acknowledge that LLMs are based entirely on the theft of intellectual property and that they are destroying our habitat and the future of our species as a whole.
I find this extremely frustrating, coming not just from some random tech bro but the man who controls arguably one of the most important pieces of software in the world.
🤖 KI ist weder Heilsbringer noch Teufelszeug – sie ist ein Werkzeug.
Kaum ein technisches Thema wird derzeit so emotional diskutiert wie Künstliche Intelligenz.
Auf der einen Seite werden enorme Erwartungen geweckt. Auf der anderen Seite wird teilweise bereits die bloße Nutzung von KI pauschal verurteilt.
Ich finde: Beides hilft uns nicht weiter.
Für mich ist KI zunächst einmal ein Werkzeug. Eines, das inzwischen erstaunlich nützlich sein kann.
Bei der Fehlersuche auf einem Server. Beim Analysieren von Logdateien. Beim Programmieren. Bei der Recherche. Um komplizierte Zusammenhänge verständlicher aufzubereiten. Oder manchmal auch einfach für eine kreative Spielerei.
Aber wie bei jedem Werkzeug gilt:
Benutze das Werkzeug, das dir bei der Lösung eines Problems hilft – aber verstehe, was du damit tust.
Denn KI kann Fehler machen. Sie kann Dinge erfinden. Und sie kann falsche Antworten mit einer Überzeugung präsentieren, bei der man zweimal hinschauen sollte. 😉
Gerade deshalb ersetzt KI für mich weder Wissen noch Erfahrung oder eigenes Denken.
Genauso wenig sollten wir die berechtigte Kritik ausblenden: Energie- und Ressourcenverbrauch, Trainingsdaten und Urheberrecht, Datenschutz, Abhängigkeiten von großen Konzernen und die gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen dieser Technologie sind wichtige Themen.
Darüber müssen wir reden – sachlich und durchaus kritisch.
Was mir dagegen zunehmend schwerfällt, ist die pauschale Einteilung in „KI ist großartig“ oder „KI ist grundsätzlich schlecht“.
Zwischen blinder Begeisterung und vollständiger Verteufelung gibt es ziemlich viel Raum für einen vernünftigen Umgang mit dieser Technologie.
Und am Ende bleibt für mich ein entscheidender Punkt:
Ein Werkzeug nimmt uns die Verantwortung für seine Verwendung nicht ab.

2 days of running #OpenBSD as a daily driver has been smooth as silk. I fixed the touchpad issue on my thinkpad and getting a linux VM setup for my web dev build and deploys was way easier than FreeBSD.
I am absolutely loving this operating system. it's solid, doesn't eat resources, and is simply a joy to use. I'm now seriously considering nuking my nixos partition and just putting debian or bazzite on it for only gaming.
