On a ferry on the North Sea: thick, grey rain clouds drift into the frame from the left, with a small patch of blue sky visible on the right. Behind the clouds, the sun casts a beam of light onto a tanker and making the grey sea glisten silvery.

Today's #SchiffsSamstag features the original 1998 Grand-class vessel Grand Princess on the left, and the 2012 Solstice-class Celebrity Reflection on the right in St Maarten last year. Both ships have capacities of around 3000 passengers, the ideal size for us.

We're in a flat cruise port, looking across a paved area to a very low wall of rocks built up to provide some sea defence protection, although they're not needed now as it feels like a still day with the sea looking nearly flat. There are clouds in the sky, thin with hints of the blue sky behind, and it feels sticky and warm, typical of Caribbean island countries. Our focus is on the two cruise ships that are docked at a low pier that emerges from just right of us. Both ships are facing in towards land so our view of them is one partly obscuring the other, both next to each other with prows pointing towards and to the right of us, and a stream of passengers walking along the pier between the vessels on their ways back to their ships. The ships are similar in size but of different designs. The ship on the left is mostly white with a stylised blue female form with wavy hair painted on the hull. The prow has a slight curve to it and a split that runs around it which contains a covered wraparound promenade deck but also lends the vessel a semi-dolphin-like appearance. The ship on the right looks more traditional with a sharper prow and dark blue hull beneath its decks of white balconies.

This is a black and white photo in landscape format of an expanse of brilliant white sea fog with a small sailboat, a large suspension bridge, a city in the background and hidden in the fog: a large oil tanker underway. San Francisco Bay, California (2016).

Rising up from the base of the photo, upwards to a little over the three-quarters up level, is an expanse of bright white sea fog. The fog thins a little towards the base of the photo with rough waters covered in multiple waves and whitecaps. The camera is located about fifty metres above the sea and angled parallel to the water's surface. In the lower right corner is a white sailing boat about one hundred metres away, under full sail, with a following wind and underway from right to left. In the upper left corner are the two towers and deck of a large suspension bridge that leads into a wide cityscape skyline, a few km from the camera, that continues across the upper portion of the image to the upper right corner. The city has multiple high-rise buildings mainly located above and slightly to the right of centre with fewer further to the right. The top of the sea fog has a rough, slightly rounded and undulating surface, much like cloud tops. Just visible above the centre and below the city is the partial view of a large crude oil tanker, about two hundred metres away, underway from left to right and mostly obscured by the dense fog. The sharp bow, black hull with the superstructure and funnel located near the stern, can just be made out. Above this scene is a clear and cloudless sky rendered bright white.
